What to Do After a Car Accident: Bury St Edmunds Guide

A calm, practical guide to the first steps after a bump in and around Bury St Edmunds, and how we help once you are ready to get the car put right.

The accident checklist

Five steps to take after a bump

1. Stop safely and check everyone is okay

If you are involved in a collision you must stop, however minor it looks. Put your hazard lights on. If the vehicles are driveable and it is safe, move them out of the running lane, because a second collision at the scene is a real risk on roads like the A11 and A14. Check everyone is okay and call 999 if anyone is hurt or the road is blocked.

2. Exchange details with the other driver involved

Take the other driver's name, address and phone number, their registration, and the make, model and colour of their car. Ask for their insurer too, and give your own details in return. Photograph their number plate rather than relying on scribbling it down. If they refuse or drive off, do not chase them. Note the registration, look for witnesses and report it to the police.

3. Take photos of the damage and the scene

Photograph more than you think you need, and do it before anything moves. Start wide, showing both vehicles where they came to rest, then take close ups of the damage on both cars. Capture the road layout, any debris or skid marks, and the other car's registration plate. It all matters if there is a dispute later, and the same photographs let us quote you from your phone.

4. Report it to your insurer if you need to claim

Reporting an incident to your insurer is not the same as making a claim. Most policies require you to notify them of any incident, even if you plan to pay for the repair yourself. Tell them what happened and make clear whether you intend to claim. If you are not sure whether a claim is worth making, ask us first and you will get an honest answer.

5. Choose who repairs your car

You can request that your car is repaired by us. Just tell your insurer when you make the claim. Whether the accident was your fault or not, we guide you through the process from start to finish and handle the communication and paperwork with insurers on your behalf. You do not have to accept a poor quality repair, and you will always get an honest opinion from us.

If you do claim, you can request that your car is repaired by us. Send photos to 07939 755264 and you will get an honest opinion on whether a claim is worth making at all. Our Insurance Work Support page explains how a claim works with us. Accidents happen. We are here for you.

Once quoted, we book the car in at our workshop in Bury St Edmunds at a time that suits you. All paintwork is done in our own spray booth, where temperature, airflow and moisture are controlled, which allows us to achieve quality results.

With the car in front of us we confirm what needs doing. Collision damage often hides a second problem behind the first, and after 22 years in the trade we know where to look.

If the accident was not your fault, our Non Fault Claims page explains how we handle it on your behalf, and our Accident Repairs page covers the repair itself. We do not keep cars longer than we need to, and we don't judge, we just fix it.
